Mary Ann vs. Ginger: The Eternal Debate

Still deserted, still isolated, and still impossible to escape…

The SS Minnow is still there, by the way—tilted, sand-choked, and sunburned to the point where it looks like driftwood wearing a boat costume. The huts are empty, the coconut-phone wires are long gone, and the bamboo pedal car sits up on blocks as if someone planned to fix it… tomorrow. Always tomorrow.

But the waves? They didn’t leave with the castaways.

On the west side of the lagoon, there’s a flawless right that locals (the crabs, mostly) call Mary Ann. It’s wholesome, honest, and just plain rough—think an aggro version of Malibu when Malibu still had dignity. Pitchy shoulders, long carves, playful pockets. Not too heavy, not too intimidating, but absolutely demands respect. A wave you could surf all day without ever getting tired of it.

Then around the corner—hidden behind a rock shelf that looks like it’s balancing on hope—you’ve got Ginger. Ginger does not play nice at all. Ginger stands up fast, throws harder, and snaps shut like it’s auditioning for a Teahupoʻo stunt double role. It has this fierce, glamorous edge to it—beautiful but threatening, like a redhead in film noir lighting who definitely knows more than she’s letting on.

I kept paddling back and forth between them, completely unable to decide which one I liked more. Mary Ann was charming, consistent, endlessly welcoming—pure stoke, zero drama. Ginger was electric, dangerous, a fast left that folded over itself like a smaller, knife-edged version of Puerto Escondido if Puerto Escondido had palm-shaded hammocks on the beach.

By noon, I’d made my decision.
Then five minutes later I unmade it.
And then I changed it again.
Back and forth. Back and forth. The debate is eternal.

Some surfers chase new breaks. Me? I’m stuck deciding between two perfect ones named after two perfect reasons this island became an icon. Gilligan’s may be long abandoned, but the waves still run the show—and they know exactly how to keep you guessing.
