The Story
At some point Jamie O'Brien decided stoked had been barked to death by surf media, so he tried to reroute the entire internet toward psyched. Noble mission. Annoying counter. Slightly clunky word. It worked… until it didn’t need to anymore.
The real flex showed up when he backed off -- fewer counters, fewer forced exclamation points, more trust that a serious wave doesn’t require a hype subtitle.
His surfing and the innovation started carrying the moment without hashtag or emoticon help, which is a luxury he earned only after years of doing the opposite.
That restraint will age well. His family is going to grow up watching clips where the ocean does the talking, not the brand voice. They'll be just like us and mute a lot of surf vids.
That’s not killing the vibe. We know when the fun happens -- even when most of the internet still thinks it has to scream at us and shaka the hell out of every little thing.
