This was a stealth mission by Stab to surf a new break spotted on satellite near an ordinary East China Sea industrial island. The wave always looked good, even when most of the region was flat. Someone had to go…
Out past the reef near the chunnel exit, a blonde surfer slid in beside me — all bright smile and easy wave, greeting me before she even paddled into a set. On the face she moved beautifully, almost too fluid, until she didn’t; every ride ended in a soft, looping wipeout. And yet she kept popping up grinning, learning something microscopic each time.
At the peak during a lull she immediately confessed: she wasn’t human at all, just a synthetic built for this coast.
I told her where I’m from, where anything touched by AI is considered suspect — art, music, journalism. She laughed and pointed at my board. “Popout,” she said. “Shaped by robots before a human touched it.”
I tried to protest. She shrugged. “When you write this story, you won’t hand-code your OS either. Humans have always used whatever tools they had.”
She went back to tumbling down wave faces, each crash slightly less dramatic than the one before. And she seemed genuinely stoked.
Only as the tide pushed in did she offer one last reveal: “These perfect waves? There’s a generator under the reef. We build those too. I’m not the only artificial thing in the water.”
A flawless hollow swung my way. Wave of the day. As I spun to go she called out, “Maybe let me take it… wouldn’t want you tainting your purity with too much technology.”
