The fall of civilization is widely recognized as getting its start in a Fox meeting room somewhere. It could have been the one where execs got pitched this…
People talk about Temptation Island like it’s all drama, seduction, and sunburned twenty-somethings crying in confessionals. And sure, that circus is happening somewhere on the beach. But the real sin—the deadly, delicious temptation—is the trio of surf breaks hiding just beyond the production zone: Sloppy Seconds, Wet Dreams, and the crown jewel, Itchy Crabs.
I’d heard rumors about them forever. Old-school message boards, bar whispers in Waikīkī, one guy swearing he’d seen Wet Dreams fire on a rogue winter swell and it looked like a cross between Cloudbreak and Lower Trestles drunk on power. Most dismissed the breaks as jokes, little in-jokes from bored locals. Turns out? Not jokes.
Sloppy Seconds was the warm-up: a snappy A-frame that felt like a rowdier version of a good day at Rocky Point—quick drops, playful pockets, steep enough to make you pay attention but forgiving enough to make you greedy.
Wet Dreams was the real surprise. Imagine Macaronis if it went to therapy, gained confidence, and decided it wanted to be six feet taller. Smooth, elastic, dreamy sections that rebuilt themselves faster than you could decide which line to take. I got one where the lip pitched over so slowly it felt like the wave was flirting.
But Itchy Crabs… that one’s why you make the trip. A reeling right that starts with a Kirra-grade freight-train takeoff, then reshapes into something closer to Lance’s Right in its prime—fast, violent, and weirdly seductive. The reef is sharp, patterned, and looks nothing like natural Hawaiian formation. Almost like someone curated it for maximum perfection and maximum penalty.
While the island’s contestants were busy sabotaging their love lives for airtime, I was chasing the cleanest fantasy of all: empty lineups, flawless reef, swell lines so perfect they looked animated.
By sunset, I was sunburned, bruised, dehydrated, and smiling like an idiot. The island tempts everyone differently. I just fell for the waves.
